ANZAC DAY.
St Mary's Cathedral Service.
"We have no misgivings about the
present-day soldiers," said Senior
Chaplain G. O'Callaghan, preaching
at a special Anzac Day commemora
tion service in St Mary's Cathedral
on Saturday. "They are living up
to the traditions of their fathers.
The qualities of the Australian
soldiers are known to the whole
world-a source of encouragement
for ourselves and a warning to any
marauding foreigner dreaming of
invasion."
A Solemn Requiem Mass was pre
sided over by the Archbishop of Perth
(Dr Prendiville), who was assisted
by Fathers Donnelly and Murphy.
The celebrant of the Mass was the
Rev Father M. T. McCatfi (RAAP
chapain), with the Rev Father Tres
siter (AMF) as deacon, and the Rev
Father Breslin, OMI (Port Chap
lain, RAN) as sub-deacon. The Rev
Father J. Rafferty was master of
ceremonies. The unaccompanied
chant of the Mass was sung by the
priests' choir under the Rev Father
A. Lynch. At the consecration, the
reveille was sounded and during
the Last Absolution at the Cata
falque, the last post. The occa
sional sermon was preiached by
Senior-Chaplain G. O'Callaghan.
Lt-General H. Gordon Bennett was
represented by Major Durack, Com
modore Collins by Lieut Manning,
and Air-Commodore H. F. de la Rue,
DFC, by Flight-Lieut O'Keefe. The
American Armed Forces were re
presented by Lt-Cdl Mann. Others
present included the American Con
sul (Mr Mason Turner). Mr Presi
dent Dwyer, the Minister for Justice
(Mr Nulsen), representing the Pre
mier, Mr E. Needham, MLA, the
Lord Mayor (Dr T. W. Meagher) and'
Mrs Meagher, Mr F. F. Anderson]
(Ex-Naval Men's Association), Chief
Inspector J. Doyle and Mr A. Yeates
and Mr Benson (RSL).
Day of Mourning Deprecated.
BRISBANE, April 26.-Anzac Day
services in churches and at mem
oriais were largely attended. About
12,000 were present at the dawn re
membrance service at the Shrine of
Remembrance. Falling in at King
George-square, returned men from
the 1914-18 war and the present
war marched together to the service,
which was also attended by a de
tachment of American soldiers, while
mingling among the silent crowd
were members of other Allied forces.
Addressing - congregation of 4,000
at a Solemn Requiem Mass .in St
Stephen's Cathedral the Rev Father
Joseph Boggins, SJ, American Army
Chaplain, said he found it difficult
to understand why Anzac Day was
a day of national mourning. "Days
of natonal mourning to meseem dan
gerous," he said. "There is in them
a tendency to draw us back to pagan
days and pagan ideals. Let your
Anzac Day have in it a gloribus note.
Let it recall to you and to the world
that brave men in a just cause fear
'-t death "
New Zealand Services.
AUCKLAND, April 26.-Anzac Day
was observed in New Zealand with
the customary services and large
gatherings which included returned
soldiers of the 1914-18 war and the
present war. Among those at the
Auckland ceremony was the Ameri
can Minister to New Zealand (Briga
dier-General Hurley), who laid a
wreath on behalf of his Govern
ment.
Norfolk Island Remembers.
NORFOLF ISLAND, April 25.-An
Anzac Day commemoration service
was held at the Soldiers' Memorial
at Kingston at 11 o'clock this morn
ing. Lined up in front of the mem
orial were the Norfolk Island In
fantry Detachment, ex-servicemen,
girl guides, boy scouts and school
children. After the opening hymn
wreaths were placed on the memorial
by the Administrator (Sir Charles
Rosenthal) followed by Lady Rosen
thal on behalf of the Norfolk
Island Division of the Red Cross,
also girl guides, boy scouts, school
children, relatives and friends of
fallen comrades in the last war and
the present war. The Rev W. E.
Godson (Church of England) con
ducted the service, assisted by Pastor
H. 'Holland (Methodist Church). The
service was concluded with the Bene
diction and the National Anthem.
After the ceremony the ex-service
men were entertained at Government
House by the Administrator.
Jerusalem Observance.
JERUSALEM, April 25.-Anzac
Day was celebrated by a dawn ser
vice at the Imperial War Cemetery
at Mt Scopus.
