RECKLESS USE OF POISON.
TO SHE EDITOR.
Sir— Will you inform me through the
medium of your valuable paper if there ia
not a Society for the protection of dumb
animals, and if bo, I wish to draw their
airenuon to tne wanton, uruci, auu u*uu
criminate poisoning of harmless animala in
thia (South-terrace) neighbourhood. Daring
the past week some evil-disposed resident
haB been throwing poison (evidently strych
nine) into the back yards of a number of
their neighboura' nooses with thereault, five
splendid domestio cats dead in various nlacea.
Thia morning a valuable puppy of mine, barely
six month? old, on which we Bet great Btore,
died in great agony at my feet, j oat Outside
my back door. Upon examination there is
no doubt he died from poison by Btryohnuie.
This pretty little harmless creature had not
beenontBide my own premises for the past
fortnight. I might mention at the bottom of
my premiBea is a narrow right-of-way, my
yard being only separated by a low fence. I
reel deeply at the wanton cruelty of tMa
case, and aa there are numbers of children
constantly playing about, I fear we shall
