COUNTRY NEWS.
BEVERLEY, Aug. 4.-The Beverley unit
of the Home Guard was at home to the
York unit on July 27 when a shoot took
place on the local range, Beverley win
ning by 1,854 points to 1.733.-The Bev
erley Golf Club's championship resulted
in an easy victory for R. M. Wansbrough
the ex-State country champion. A. Mc
Grath was the winner of the plate event
run in conjunction.-An old resident of
the district died on July 30, in the per
son of Mr. Frederick Richard Boyd
Broun. who was a grandson of the
State's first Colonial Secretary. He was
80 years of age and as a young man
pioneered the Jelcoblne district, west of
Brookton.
BOYANUP JUNCTION. Aug. 4.-The
Home Guard is growing apace, and is
doing good work.-The rainfall for the
year to date is 3.118 points. Drying
winds and rain operating alternately,
are making a good growing season.-The
Preston river on Saturday last, was
again in high flood.
BUSSELTON, Aug. 4.-Rainfall re
corded for July totalled 673 points, and
for the first seven months of the year
2.375 points, which exceeds by 58 points
the total fall during 1940.-The death
occurred on July 26 of a pioneer resi
dent of the district, Mr. Arthur Smith,
of Yallingup. who was 6orn at Quin
dalup 78 years ago and had resided in
the district for the greater part of his
life.
DONNYBROOK, Aug. 2.--The annual
meeting of the R.S.L. was held on July
28. when the following officers were re
elected: President, Mr. J. Rudd; secretary,
Mr. D. M. Ferguson; treasurer, Mr. C.
C. Penn. The financial position of the
branch shows an improvement over last
year.-Organised by the Donnybrook
Younger Set a "Night in Egypt" ball was
held on July 30 in aid of patriotic funds
and was a great success. Approximately
£25 was realised.-Donnybrook is ex
periencing one of its wettest winters for
many years. The rainfall for July was
830 points, bringing the total for the
year to 2,869 points.
GERALDTON. Aug. 1.-Satisfactory re
ports of the work of the Geraldton In
fant Welfare Centre were presented at
the annual meeting on Thursday night.
The erection of the new cel,tre,
which will cost £800. has been
commenced. The annual meeting of the
Geraldton Maternity Hospital was also
held during the week, when it was stated
that the number of births during the
year was 145 compared with 195 for the
previous year. Reference was made to
the valuable work which the hospital was
performing for the town and the sur
rounding country districts, and to the
need that existed for the public to con
tinue its support to enable the institu
tion to be carried on under the best pos
sible conditions.
MT. MAGNET. Aug. 3.-A painful acci
dent occurred at Mt. Magnet Gold Mines
on Monday last, when Mr. R. Farrell had
his right hand crushed under the tool
sharpener. An operation was immedi
ately performed. one finger being ampu
tated.-On Saturday night the annual
bail in aid of the Mt. Magnet Hospital
was held in the Anzac Memorial Hall.
It is estimated over 250 People were
present.--On the golf links last Sundar
a Stapleford competition resulted in a
win for W. Gregory. An 18-hole compe
tition conducted by the associates was
won by Mrs. E. Crlck.-At the annual
elections for the Mt. Magnet hospital
committee Mr. F. Owens was the only
new member returned.
SOUTHERN CROSS. Au. i.--The an
nual meeting of the Southern Cross
branch of the Red Cross at the Tow-n
Hall on July 26 elected Mrs. J. G. Madin
president.-The Southern Cross girls'
gymnasium which is a flourishing effort.

Forrester been given the use of spacious
premises in the main street of the town.
-News received this week stated
that Southern Cross is to be the ter
minus of the East-West Road and a sur
vey has been authorised for a direct
road from Norseman.
UPPER CHAPMAN. Aug. 1.-At the
annual meeting of the Nanson branch
of the Red Cross Society and.the Nanson
branch of the Camp Comforts Fund it
was decided to form a combined
Patriotic Funds Committee to work for
