FOOTBALL
CHALLENGE TO WEST
PERTH
Non-partisan league football
enthusiasts will have a difficult
job to select the keenest and
most vital games next Baturday.
Although it has a far from im
pressive record of performances
at Leederville Oval In recent
years, East Perth, which will
meet West Perth there on Sat
urday, cannot be taken lightly
this week. The team ended a
long run of defeats at Fre
mantle when it beat South Fre
mantle last Saturday and
should therefore go to Leeder
ville Oval -on Saturday unaf
fected by the venue of the game.
West Perth was beaten by Perth
when it last played at Leeder
ville.
The East Fremantle-Perth
game at Fremantle cannot be
rated under that at Leederville.
At their last meeting on the
W.A.C.A. ground Perth won
very decisively bf 44 points.
Perth is now a close third on
the premiership table and East
Fremantle is fourth. East Fre
mantle will be on its home
ground but Perth, in defeating
South Fremantle, has shown
that it can win at Fremantle.
Claremont and Subiaco have
each recorded two wins this
season, Claremont being ahead

by virtue of averages. Subiaco
beat Claremont by eight points
at their last meeting on Sublaco
Oval. There should be some
keen ruck and roving duels in
this game.
Swan Districts gave West
Perth a fright at Bassendean
Oval on Saturday and this week
it will be opposed to South Fre
mantle on the same ground.
Puilling trained wits East Pre
mantle after a long absence due to
a thigh, inJury and he will probably
be given a run with the seconds
on Baturday. Wendt, who has a
leg Injury, trained last night and
appeared to be sound but It Is
doubtful If the selectors will risk
pflaying him on Saturday. Bal
ingali has a strained leg muscle.
An ankle injury is still troub
ling Murray of Bouth Fremantle.
He had a run yesterday but alter
trainIng he said that the ankle
was still sore. Lewington trained
and moved easily, apparently un
troubled by the hip injury which
prevented his taking the field last
waeek. P. tenfry, who received a
knock on the head last Saturday,
was not at training. Jenkins was
also absent. The South Frenantle
coach (Ross Hutchinson) save the
players a solid work-out.
All of Perth's league players ex-
cept Wray are expected to be avail-
able by next Baturday. Yesterday
Gilchrist, who has a groin injury,
did not train but may be fit by
Saturday and McKenzie. who has
a sore knee, also did not train but
will probably have a run tomorrow.
Players and officials attach a lot of
importance to the next game as
they consider that a win would
greatly improve the side's chance of
gaining either first or second posi-
tion. it is hoped that Wray will
be available .by Baturday week. He
will have an X-ray examination
shortly. Last night after a players'
tea the Perth coach (Austin Rob-
ertson) gave a lecture to the saouth
Perth and Victoria Park amateur
teams.
