OTHER NORTHERN MINES.
The fields above enumerated are the
only ones In the North-East at which any
practical work has been done, but it is
bevnnd ttanhi: that tha whole nf that
country is rich in minerals, traces of gold,
silver, and copper being everywhere dis
cernible, and in the course of a few years
thousands of acres as yet unpros
pected will be maintaining a large
mining population. A good deal
nearer Adelaide, about 20 miles north of
Hallett, on what is known as the Uiooloo
Goldfield, work has been carried on inter
mittently since 1870 or 187L The whole
of the mining done here has been in the
alluvial, and has been confined to settlers
in the district, who have utilized their
spare time in this way. It is thus im
possible to say how much gold has
been obtained at Uiooloo, but between
£18,000 and £20,000 worth has been
transmitted through the Hallett Poat
Office as the result of the fossicking done
here. The Wonna and Cockatoo Valley
fields are of very much more recent dis
covery, and are in the same neighbour
hood as Uiooloo. Hardly any work has
been done at Cockatoo Valley, but a trial
crushing of 5 tons of stone from Wonna,
obtained from a depth of 50 feet, has in
duced a few speculators to put a little
money into the concern. Gold has also
been discovered in small quantities at the
Peak, Mount Magnificent, and various
parts of the Flinders Range, but at the
present time hardly any work is being
done on them.
