WHEAT POLICY.
Effect in Western Australia.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr
Watts) during the debate on the
Estimates last night said that dur
ing the term of office of the present
Goverment, 3,183 farms under the
Agricultural Bank had been aban
doned. Some had been re-sold on
the hire purchase system. Some had
reverted to the Lands Department
but there were approximately 2,000
on the bank's hands.
If the Federal Government con
tinued its present wheat policy he
did not think the development of
WA would ever proceed on satisfac
tory lines. At present rural develop
ment was at a standstil. There
had been a compulsory reduction of
one-third in wheat acreage and the
shortage of superphosphate had hn
posed further acreage restrictions.
The result had been that WA had
suffered very badly. It seemed to
him that the Federal Government
should be satisfied with the addi
tional acreage reduction brought
about by the shortage of superphos
phate.
