SIXTEEN ANNAS, AT 12's
OUTCLASSES HURDLERS
SYDNEY HORSE'S GOOD FORM
AT CAULFIELD :
MELBOURNE. Saturday.
The Sydney performer," Sixteen Annas, scored an im- i
prcssive, win in the Learning ton Hurdle Race at Caulfield this
afternoon. ' Ridden'by'LvJ. Hynes Sixteen Annas cleared
right away turning for hom e,' and won pulling up. Akanree
and Ranclca struggled on to fill Ûi*p)*f&zJ:':\\\^\~t' ;

in Melbourne.
BEAUT BARTON AT LAST '". 1
: Beau Barton, the Tasmanian cracV
two-year-old, arrived on the mainlanil
i with a reputation of being: one of thc
fastest juveniles who had raced on thc
island for many years." ' That . tliii
claim was not exaggerated: was shown
by tile way in which ; tho gelding
showed a clean pair of heels to hi»
opponents in the second division of
tue. Lillimur Handicap. . . '-.' ;
. Clearing away -with a lead of -five
lengths at the end of three f Hongs.
Beau Barton never'looked like'being
troubled. He. entered thc .straight
nearly six lengths in front of Eústerr
Spot and Whcrnside, and although hq
was beginning to tire,-still lind four
lengths' to i spare when ; the post was
reached. -i"
- Next season lie is likely, to prove.n
: really, useful galloper.-up to seven fur-
longs. Air Flay, -who was made a
warm favorite,- was'never able to' copó
with the.great-speed of Beaus Barton
in thc carly 'stages; and appeared th
bo hampered by thc heavy going. Ho
was.never,dangerous,, and -was one of
tlie.last"to finish., . .", .-.
GAY FRIAR UNLUCKY ?
The chief disappointment cf tha
Murrumbeena Handicap" was the
favorite, Gay Friar, ' who to ; his
backers' consternation swung , half
, way round when the. barrier rose
and lost a few ' lengths. There was
hot ' "much pace . on, ' however, and
Voitre waB able to catch up with thc
field and get the chestnut into a good
position. He' wis in* a splendid posi-
tion later on, and at the three fur-
long post was close behind the
leaders. A little further on when
several horses made forward moves
Gay Friar scented to clip the heels
of a horse in front, and Voitre had to
-sifcjjp and- snatch his mount up.
He lost ground in doing sb, and
it was ' obvious that he had no
chance of- success 'when the tum was
rounded.
?Royal Armour looked a possibility
at the ' distance, but- although he - was
hard ridden ami responded - well kc
could not reach the first and second
horses. It was his best effort for
some-time,
Highardo may be marked down as
I a coming, winner, ' and considering
I that the, class was good Crossfoy did
fairly well. Dubup was a disappoint-
ment, .as he was one of the beat
backed horses in the race. He was
always-one of the -lost few.
Skidmore's . success on Gay
Star increased his ' lead over
Bailey and Voitre In the winning
jockeys list, and' makes hia posi-
tion at the head of the list quite
aafe for the season.
Gay Star, who b'rilUantly won thc'
Murrumbeena Handicap, always runs
his best races at Caulfield. He is
trained at Flemington, and the
change of environment seems to suit
kith. Racing to the turn, Skidmore
had to pull him to the outside, to ob-
tain a run but. when ho did so Gay
Star responded splendidly and with-
stood a challenge by . Bunsby Gaze,
who finished . strongly.1 'Royal
Armour was a good third and ran'a
fine race ¡under¿ hi3 big, weight. ,.
