ROWING.
University Race in Sydney.
No definite information has been re
ceived by the University Boat Club as
to the exact date upon which the eight
oar race between crews representing the
Australian Universities will be held in
Sydney. It is expected that the race will
be held during the first week in June
at Penrith on the Nepean River. All the
Australian Universities will be repre
sented in the race. The West Australian
crew will leave for Sydney about May 12
when the first University term ends. De
tails of the careers ofthe members of
the West Australian crews are as fol
lows:
J. Barker is a former student of the
Geelong Grammar School. He has done
most of his rowing with St. George's
College, Crawley, being captain of the
college boat club. He was a member of
the only St. George's College crew to win
the extra-collegiate race. S. Gll has
rowed for Gulldford Grammar School,
but this is his fiht essay at other than
secondary school vowing. L Tate was
a member of last year's Auinas eight
and has done some rowing with the FIe
mantle Rowing Club. He is one of the
few oarmnen in the boat who is at home
on both sides. E. E. Jarvis is a new
comer to the sport. He s the Rhodes
Scholar for Western Australla for 1939
and has played interstate lacrosse. L
G. Metcalf is an old Scotch College oar.
He rowed in the 1936 head of the river
crew for the college until forced by ill
ness to retire. Besides being vice-cap
tain of the West Australian University
Boat Club, he has taken an active part
in the St. George's College Boat Club and
has. represented the college severaltimes
in extra-collegiate races. T. Davy is an
other interschool oar, having been a
member of the Hale School crew which
was narrowly beaten in the interschool
rowing last year. He is a son of the
late Mr. T. A. L. Davy, who was well
known in West Australian rowing circles
some years ago. D. Barratt Hill is better
known as the stroke of Scotch College
crews, having stroked the last three win
ning crews from the college, as well as
rowing bow in the winning crew of 1935.
He has won-several pennant races in the
last two years. He has represented the
State in amateur athletics, being a mem
ber of the 1937 team that went to Bris
bane. He is the only local athlete to
have held a State title while still at
schooL G. Barratt Hill also rowed for
Scotch College, rowing two in 1934 and
stroking the college crew in 1935. Hs is
captain of the University Boat Club and
has stroked and rowed in the University
fours that have won pennant races in
the last two years. At the inter-faculty
regatta last year he stroked the winning
engineering pairs and eight and the
winning extra-collegiate eight. L Robert
son, the emergency, has been an active
member of the University Boat Club for
the past two years and' last year rowed
in pennant regattas. He plays lacrosse
for the University Lacrosse Club of which
he.Is the secretary.
