THURSDAY'S WEATHER CHART.
NOTES ON CHART.-A large and fairly intense anticyclone was yesterday morning
centred to the south-west of Victoria and covered most of the southern half of the Com
monwealth. In Western Australia the north-western quadrant of this high-pressure system
extended to the vicinity of Mundiwindi and was associated with a strong flow of north
easterly winds with attendant fine weather, while in the tropics also there was a prevalence
of dne weather and easterly winds. In the south-eastern part of the continent, however.
the south-easterly winds forming part of the air circulation in the north-eastern quadrant
of the anticyclone introdsced great volumes of moist air from the south Tasman Sea and
caused rain in eastern New South Wales and eastern Tasmanian. Afternoon reports sug
gested that the anticyclone was moving to the eastward and a slight fall in barometric
pressure occurred in Western Australia as the most westerly sectors of the anticyclone
tended to withdraw to the eastward and a tropical depression made some progress to the
southward toward Shark Bay. This movement is, however, unlikely to prevent the con
tinuance of unorth-easterly winds with attendant fine weather and warm to fairly hot
temperatures in the sub-tropics today.
