DAVIS CUP
BIENNIAL CONTESTS
REJECTED
Discouraged By U.S.A.
NEW YORK, Aug. 5.-The New
York "Sun's" tennis writer, com
menting on the recent international
decision in London to continue the
Davis Cup competition as an annual
event, says that American tennis
diplomacy saved the Davis Cup from
passing into oblivion.
FTe quotes Mr. Holcombe Ward,
president of the United States Lawn
Tennis Association, as saying today
that the American delegate, Mr.
Russell Kingman had done fine work
against discouraging odds in com
bating the South African proposal!
for biennial contests. I
Mr. Ward said: "Tinkering with1
the Davis Cup regulations is like1
mumps and measles, an epidemic
every few years before the spasm is
over."
The "Sun's" tennis writer says
that Australia is known to be spend
ing 30,000 dollars in 1947 to finance
its team. He adds that the Austra
lians are gambling on their share ofl
the gate and hope to recoup their
outlay by being the challengers to
the United States at Forest Hills.
Defeat by the Czechoslovaks in
Canada would leave Australia with
a deficit.
