CANTEEN PROFITS.
CENTRAL FUND APPROVED
Aid for Ex-Servicemen.
BRISBANE, Aug. 25.-A central
fund to control profits Jrom service
canteens and similar sources total
ling £4,560,000 has been approved
by Federal Cabinet. The money will
be allocated to the assistance of
members and ex-members of the
services, their dependants, and the
dependants of those who died.
Advising this at Biloela last night
the Army Minister (Mr. Forde) said
a first charge on the fund would be
for educational assistance to child
ren of ex-servicemen and for the
education and maintenance of
children of deceased and incapaci
tated servicemen. An inter-depart
mental committee had recommended
to Cabinet that assistance should
also be afforded children of ex
servicemen in necessitous circum
stances. It was estimated that
£2,500,000 would be required for
these purposes.
Relief for dependants of mem
bers, ex-members and deceased ser
[vicemen in poor circumstances was
another recommendation adopted by
Cabinet. This relief would be at the
discretion of trustees of the fund
and might take the form of periodi
cal lump sum grants. Under the
recommendations all accumulated
canteen profits and profits of a simi
lar nature would be pooled by the
army, navy and air force. Each ser
vice would retain £60,000 for the
benefit of members still serving.
Funds available were navy,
£145.000: army, £3,705.000 and air
force. £710.000. The fund would be
administered by trustees to be ap
pointed and legislation would be
prepared in readiness for next ses
sion. Mr. Forde said that contem
plated legislation would honour the
assurance given by the Federal Gov
ernment to members of the forces
and the public that no part of these
funds would be transferred to con-,
solidated revenue but would be de-I
voted entirely for the benefit of
members and former members of the
services and their dependants.
