.BROADLAND HOUSE SCHOOL
The distribution of prizes took place
at Broadland House School on Thursday
morning at 11. Archdeacon Beresford
presided, and presented the prizes. The
Rev. A. F. Maldon Robb, in proposing
a vote of thanks to the Archdeacon, re-
ferred to the great interest he had
taken in the school, saying how much he
would be missed at the annual gather-
ing. Report.
The approaching close of the year re-
quires a brief notice of the chief events
connected with our school life. Misses
E. Henry and M. Sampson have both
taken their degrees, the former in medi-
cine at the Melbourne University-the
first Tasmanian girl educated in Tas-
mania to take a degree in medicine, I
think-and the other her B.A. at our
own University. Both these girls dis-
tinguished themselves in the junior and
senior examinations, and we are very
proud of their recent success. The Old
Girls' Association last September held
their first "at home," and it afforded me
great pleasure to meet so many of my
former pupils, and to be told of the
happy memories they had of their old
school. The committee and secretary
are to be congratulated on the great
success of their first reunion. I need
scarcely mention the fact that next year
they take charge of the school fair for
charities, which takes place towards the
end of the year. Of the school work
during the present year I can confidently
state that on the whole it has been
good. Some of the senior girls have
done excellent work, and I trust will
be successful in their senior public ex-
aminations. I am glad to notice that
most of them have had a higher ideal
before them than examinations, as
evinced by their interest in their work.
I am also glad that, acting on my sug-
gestions, some parents decided to allow
their daughters to wait another year
for their junior public. They were rather
young, and will do themselves more
credit later on. As you are all aware,
I am not an advocate for examinations
unless there be a definite purpose in
view, for the lasting educational work
is that done quietly which stimulates,
strengthens, and helps one to perform
the duties lying closest at hand. Miss
Rock's music pupils have been all suc-
cessful in their musical examinations, D.
Miles gaining honours. Since my last
report there have been some changes in
the staff; Miss Cocker has gone to
Canada, and Miss L. Murray left us at
Michaelmas to join her sister. These
ladies had been with us some 16 years,
and we were very sorry to lose them. I
have, indeed, been most fortunate in my
teachers, and feel that any success the
school has had is mainly due to their
untiring devotion to their work and
loyalty to myself. May I just state
here that I shall probably take a holi-
day some time next year, as I have been
feeling the need of a rest? The school
will be left in charge of Miss Middle-
ton and Miss M. Hogg, assisted by a
competent staff, as was done on a
former occasion. Once more I have to
thank Archdeacon Beresford for pre-
siding at our annual distribution of
prizes. During his incumbency of St.
John's he has taken the greatest inter-
est in the school, and we are very sorry
he is to leave Launceston. He takes
with him our best wishes, and we trust
he will long he spared to carry on the
work which had been laid on him. To
the donors of prizes-Misses Harrison,
Rock, Sherwin, Middleton, and Smith,
and Messrs. Birchall and Thornthwaite
- I tender my sincere thanks for their
generous gifts. The prizes have been well
earned. I am only sorry that so many
girls who have worked well do not ob-
tain any.
