TOKIO. -Sept. .9.
The Australian de
stroyer HMAS Anzac —
the Mnosjt iiHMlern UN
trarsViSn in Korean waters —
event into action for the first
time yesterday with brilliant
success.
Standing three miles off
the west coast of North
Korea, near Haeju, the An
zac engaged a Communist
coastal gun in a fortress of
solid concrete.
The Anzac tossed 11 shells
from her four 4.5-inch guns
at the gun position.
When smoke from the
bursting: shells, some, of
which were iead on the
target, had cleared, the
concrete roof of the posi
tion was sagging te and
the sun aperture was
blown wide open.
The. Anzac was ordered
into action after friendly,
occupied islands off the
Haeju area reported they
were being shelled from the
mainland.
The first target was a two
storeyed building being used
for a gun control centre.
A. salvo from the Anzac
demolished one side of the
building.
