, . Sydaey,-S^rdáy.
JKegarding the dispute- which has led
io the. hold-up. of the steaatee Ka-
toomba, Mr. Kelso declared that , the
Katoomba is idle because of the tactics
of. the unions. He explained that the
steamer will bo tied up indefinitely.
The crew has been paid off, and certain
members hare, left for their homos in
other States.
The position-on the waterfront is re-
garded as serious. Shipowner describe
it as job control. The present dispute
is due to M'Uwraith. M'Eacharn, and
Co. refusing to pay compensation to a,
seaman on another vessel who was in-
jured. ' The'company allege that the
injury was du©'to a brawl and not to
an accident in the course of his em«
ployment. ? ' .
The boat cannot be placed in commis-
sion again before a month's time. Pas*'
sengers fop Melbourne have been trans-
ferred to tho Wyandra, whieh sails to-
day,- and the remainder have had their
fares returned.
]ttr. Fleming, of the Seamen's Union,
declined to discuss the subject matter
of the dispute. "All I have to say
about the Katoomba is that the article*
expired yesterday. and that the crew
has not been asked to sign on again,"
he said.. .. . .
