REVOLT IN IRELAND
HFTY-SIX OP CROWS FORCES
MURDERED SINCE DEC. 22

(Rioter's .Message.)
? - " , . London, February 18.
! Kcplying to Questions on the subject I
1 of Ireland, tho Chief Secretary, Sir |
Hamar Greenwood, denied, in the j
House of Commons, the "preposterous
allegation" that auxiliary forces had
been driven out of Cork at the point
of the bayonet by General Strickland's
orders. Fifty-six member8 _ of the
Crown forces had been assassinated in
Ireland since December 22 last, and a
number of arrests- had been made in
connection therewith. It was impossible
to say how many non-combatants had
been killed in the same period. Tho
majority of such casualties had occurred
in the exchange of firing, following on
attacks upon lorries in crowded places.
Tho real responsibility rested with tho
Sinn Fein, who had been the assail-
ants. There had been 17 deaths of
people attempting to escape from cus-
tody or neglecting summonses to halt.
Details of tho destruction of bridges
in County Cork show that «t was a
well-planned attempt to isolate West
Cork. Practically every bridge of
strategic value has been partially or
completely destroyed, and the railways
blocked with debris. The Sinn Fein's
latest move is to hinder the military
road trafilo by trench digging.
