HOOKEY CLUB SOCIAL.
Tho Broken Hill Hockey Club held a
? successful smoko sociul in tho lodgurnom
of Tait's Masonic Hall last night. Mr.
H.. Broadbent presided. .Proceedings'
opened with an overture well-executed
by Mr. E. J. Newbury, and tho loyal
toast proposed by tho chairman. Thon
followed an exceptionally lino musical
programme contributed to by Messrs.
Hebbeck, Francis, Jeune, S. G. Law-
rence, L. W. Dean, E. Broadbent, Muy,
Hankel, Barndon, and Fuller.' Messrs.
Hebbeck, Francis, Barnden, and Wells,
rendered a quartette, tho Warrignls a
chorus, and Messrs. \V. Dunn and Huck
recitations.
Mr. Hack proposed tho toast of "Tho
Broken Hill Hockey Club." Ho did
not, ho said, know much about tho
gamo of hockey, but he bolioved it was
a combination of lacrosse and foot-
ball, played with sticks. He hoped
that tho members of the Broken Hill
Hockey Club would nlways boar in mind
the true Englishman's ideal of sports-
manship, und would never allow the in-
troduction of hooliganism of which
they had read so much of lato in con-
nection with sports. Ho wished tho
club every success, (Applause),
Mc. F. AV. Bullock (captain), re-
sponded. He briefly dealt with tho for-
mation of the club, and stated that the
present membership roll numbered
some 60 members. " They had played
six matches, and he could any that
they had thoroughly enjoyed the game.
They had played one match with the
ladies which had proved very enjoyablo
in every respect, and ho hoped that
they would ugain meet the ladies short-
ly, .ind he felt satisiied that the same
good feeling would exist. The club had
sent a chaueuge to tho South Austra-
lian Combined Stato Club, but up to
the present no reply had been reoetved.
lt was hoped, however, that tho club
would go to South Australia about
September next. Hockey was ijew to
the Barrier, and was not in any. way
rough. Anyway the mortality amongst
hookey players up to tho present had
not been very great. He proposed
the toast of "The Visitors," and at
the .same time thanked all wfeo bad
assisted in making ,tho evening both
enjoyable and harmonious. ' ;
. -The toast was drunk with musical
honors, and was responded to,by severn]
of the visitors. ,
The evening concluded . with the sing-
ing of'tho "National Anthem." ,
Mr, E. J. Newbury officiated as ac-
companist in his usual capable manner.
