QUEENSLAND.
©r.e thousand two hundred and ninety-seven
immigrants landed at Brisbane during tho week
ending September 30, besides those landed at the
Northern ports. Seven thousand nine hundred
more are now on their way to Queensland.
The Immigration Board have reported on the
complaints of dereliction of duty against the
surgeon, master, and officers of the immigrant
steamer Nowsherra. In consequence of the report
the Colonial Secretary directs that Captain
Livingstone be severely censured for not sustain
ing the surgeon's authority ; that the usual gratuity
to the chief officer be withheld for undue famili
arity with the single girls ; that the second officer
be debarred from coming to the colony ta any
emigrant vessel ta future ; and that Dr. usher be
not again employed in the Queensland immigration
service.
The immigrant ship Western Monarch has .been
quarantined, owing to there being fever aboard.
Thirty cases of fever occurred dunng the voyage,
resulting ta thirteen deaths.
The official correspondence between the Governor
of Hongkong and Lord Derby in reference to the
proposal of Messrs. Bntterfleld & Swives, a com
mercial firm at Hongkong, to send indented Chinese
emigrants to Queensland, has been published.
Lord Derby, ta forwarding the correspondence to
the Governor of Queensland, states that he has
instructed the .Governor of Hongkong not to allow
Chinese emigration to Queensland under contracts
of service without further instructions.
The revenue returns ahow a total revenue proper
for the quarter ending September 30 of £709,069, or
an Jr'-rease of £59.SS6 on the corresponding period
of last year. The principal increases were on uns
toms, £10,000 ; the TSd'ray receipts were £30,000,
and the pastoral occupation receipt, £31,000. The
land renenue shows a decrease of £15,000. The
expenditure for the quarter was £407,072, or an
increase of £51,924. The expenditure out of the
Loan Fund was £414,000 or an increase of £161,700.
The credit balance on September 30 was £613,59L
The polling in connection with the remaining
batch of elections has resulted ta nearly all the
seats beinR carried by Oppositionists.
Owing'.to the scarcity of coloured labourers, and
the uncertainty of a satisfactory settlement of the
coolie question, it has been stated that the Mackay
sugar-planters are restricting operations to a con
siderable extent, and discharging all the white men
who can possibly be dispense with.
The quantity of sugar exported from Queensland ?
for the fortnight ending October 5 was 1,916 tons, j
making a total of 7,330 tons up to the beginning of ;
July.
The Vice-Admiralty Court to-day mads a decree
that £3,500 should be paid by the steamer Teviot- j
dale to the owners and crew of the Waroocga for i
salvage.
