SHIP WIRELESS^
New Regulations.
Cairns Applications.
Following a recent disaster in which a
collier was-lost at sea the Federal
and State Governments of Austra-
lia has promulgated regulations ex-
tending the scope of the act provid-
ing for the installation of wireless
sets in sea going vessels.
. THE DATE.
The Queensland regulations come into
force on August 1, while the Federal
ones will be operative from.October-.1.
These regulations apply to- the sugar
lighters, engaged on the service to Cairns
and already they have been equipped
with' the requisite automatic alarm sets.
ALL ABOARD! V
Mr. P.- H. Andrews, radio inspector
bf " the .post office, whose headquarters
are in'Brisbane, is at present in Cairns
inspecting the-installations. ,
He told a 'Tost" representative last
night " that these sets could be operated
very simply, but it was necessary for
one member of the crew of each: vessel
to secure a limited operators ticket'
ADVANTAGES.
The sets would send out the distress
signal and also the" position of the ves-
sel which would be an advantage even
should there be no danger.
It is necessary with boats over . 750
tons that a qualified wireless operator
should be employed. -
