INSTALLATION OF THE RIGHT REV, DR.
SHIEL.
The ceremony of installing the Bight Rev. Dr.
Shiel as Roman Catholic Bishop of Adelaide took
place on Sunday at St Francis Xavier's Cathedral,
Victoria-square. The day was cold and equally.
mi ma uniavouraote state oi ine weather seemed
;o haye no effect in deterring persons from
ittending the church. The building was crowded in
ivery part, and theie could scarcely have been less
ihan 2,000 persons present, probably the largest
issemblage that has met together in this colony in
my place of worship. As may be supposed, all
ihe members of the Roman Catholic Church who
could attend were present; but there was a con
siderable number of members of other denomina
tions. It would not have been a matter of surprise
if the assembling of so large a body of persons had
been attended with some confusion; but it is
gratifying to be able to say that the demeanour of
that large but mixed assembly exhibited the
greatest propriety and decorum.
Apart from the interest whbh Dr. Shiel's repu
tation had aroused in the minds of his coreli
gionists, the fact that this was the first time that
an Episcopal installation had occurred in South
Australia excited a considerable amount of
curiosity. When the late BUhnp Murphy came to
this colony he was accompanied hy one priest only,
the late Very Rev. Mr. Ryan. Ihat prelate had a
diocese indeed, but scarcely a flock, or at least one
so scattered that his|labonrs were more those
of a missionary than a prelate. The results of
his exertions will net soon be forgotten, and
it was mainly due to his zeal and energy
that the fioman Catholic body were able to
erect a Cathedral worthy of a Bishop, and suitable
for such an imposing ceremony at that o/ Sur.day.
The Right Rev. Dr. GeoghegHD. who succeeded
him, took possession of his diocese, but dispensed
with the ceremony of installation.
At 11 o'clock the Right Rev. Dr. Fhiel, accom
panied by the Rev» P. Hughes, of Willungm
arrived at the door of the Cathedral, where he was
received by the Veiy Rev. J. Smyth, Vicar
General; the Very Rev. Julian E. T. Woods,
Chaplain and Secretary to the Bishop; the Very
Rev. J. Tappeiner, S.J., and several other clergy
men. A procession was then formed, the Rev.
ilr. O'Connor bearing the Bishop's cross, and sup
ported by two acolytes, leading the way. Then
followed 12 acolytes, the Master of the Ceremonies,
the Rev. P. Russell, and the liev. O. Reynolds, the
Rev. Mr. Dowling and the Rev. Mr. Bongaerts. aa
junior deacons, and other clergy,- and finally the
Right Rev. Bishop, supported by the Vicar
General and his Chaplain.

reading of this instrument serves as the formal
induction of the Bishop to his diocese. ' The
Te Heum was then sung by the choir, and after
the Bishop had chanted the curtomnry piayer of
the Church he was conducted to the throne, where
he was formally invested with tbe insignia of his
office.
The investiture being thus complete the Bishop
proceeded in full pontificals to the altar to cele
brate solemn Pontificial High Mass. The Epistle
of the day having been read from the throne was
chanted in the sanctuary by the Pub-Deacon.
The Gospel was then intoned by the Deacon, and
the service proceeded in the usual way.
The Mass selected was Mozart's 12th, and this
beautiful composition was mo*t effecdvely Viuig
by the choir,, which was considerably streng!l3
by the addition of some oi the leading proflsSon j
singers now i » Adelaide. Instead oi thrurga^
there was a full instrumental accomDaniment
At the dote of the mass the customary prayer
for Her aiajestv the queen and the Royal family
was chanted; the choir then sang the ?'Laudate/'
and the ceremony was at an end.
His Lordship then proceeded down the nave of
the church accompanied by the attendant priests,
&£., and on arrival at the door was conducted to
his carriage.
Owing to the length nf time occupied by the
ceremonial there was no sermon in ihe morning.
In the evening the Bishop officiated at vesper?,
assisted by the Very Rev. J. E. T. Woods and the
Rev. T. Bongaerts who acted as cantors.
After the usual Psalms had been sung the
Bishop, having divested himself of his mitre and
cape, ascended the pulpit and preached a sermon,
taking his text from John x. 16 -'And other
sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also
I must bring, andjthey shall hear my voice; and
there shall be one fold and one shepherd.1' The
evening service .concluded with solemn bene
diction.
The church was quite as much crowded as in the
morning.
The Right Rev. Dr. Shiel intends to hold a con
firmation at the Cathedral on Sunday, the 30th
instant ?
