THE SUGAR
SHORTAGE
(From Our Special
Représentative)
CANBERRA. June 22.-In the.
House of Representative -last '
night. Mr. "W. C. Haworth, Liberal
Member for Isaacs (Victoria), drew
attention to the scarcity of re-
fined sugar. Some improvement
in distribution was needed. he
said, particularly in Victoria. The
C.S.R. Company recognised only n
limited list of distributors and it
wac the Government's duty to see
that consumers were properly
protected. Sugar was . selling at
the blackmarket prices of £80 a
ton, and agents seemed to be able
to get it from the north.
Mr. Edmunds, the Member for
Herbert, said the Government
should get to work and find out
who was responsible for the black
market. It had no connection with
the sugar industry's request for a
higher price. "More sugar has
been taken from Queensland up
to the present time this year than
at any. time in the past," he added.
