Txean was a good attendance at the
Albert Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mr
W. W. Thornthwaite, city organist, gave
one of the Sunday afternoon recitals which
bave become so popular. The pieces played
were the productions of several of the
eminent musicians who have contributed
to the stora of sacred music, and it is
easily conceived Ihatfull justice was meted
out to them by Mr Thornthwaite, whose
eapabilities as an organist are amply re
cognised by the public, who show their
appreciation by their hearty applause.
Toe hon. Nicholas J. Brown, Speaker of
the RIouse of Assembly, who arrived here
on Friday by express on private business,

MnR G. W. Weraunouse, P.M., occupied B
the bench at the City Police Court on

TnEusR is a lot of gossip floating about
(writes "Anglo-Australian") regarding
the rumoured probable reconstruction of
the Imperial Cabinet after the general
election-that is, of course, if the Tories
come back from the country with a ma
jority. It is said, for one thing, that Lord cla
Knutsford would, in such an event, retire, ce
and that he would probably be succeeded
in the colonial portfolio by Sir Robert
Herbert, who it is rumoured, will shortly
be raised to the peerage under the title of
Baron Brisbane. Baron de Worms is also
to be promoted. according to the gossipers, Se
and Sir George Baden-Powell given the
Under-Secretaryship for the Colonies. Sir 48
George has done much during the last 13
half-a-dozen years, both for the Empire
and for his party, and he certainly de
serves some substantial recognition of his
useful services.
"LoNeronD NOTIs" writes on Satur- p
day:-A rare occurrence, and one which hi
raised the excitement of a number of small m
boys who were eye witneses, took place in
one of our main streets to-day shortly
after noon, when a fine hare was seen
showing its paces down Wellington-street, A
having, it is supposed, wandered from its
home on the Belmont eetate, just off the
township. Either the hurrysome nature se
of the animal, or the fact that it was not
" game" enough, hindered it from calling
at my office to inspect the gigantic carrots
and parsnips lately reported as being on
view there, and as no "coursers "-bypedi
cal or quadrupsdical--hove in sight the 01
wanderer, when opposite the church square, t1
took a sudden turnto the right, shot across
the old Soudan promenade, and when last g
sighted was going at top speed in the t
direction of Honeymoon lane. City friends
interested (monetarily) in our welfare can
from the foregoing form a good opinion of
the traffie in our main streets, and the pre
sent state of " biz" here on Saturdays, the v
t world's acknowledged marketing day of
the week.

held at Lawrence Vale, in connection with

pleasant and edifying programme was sub.
Iy mitted to a large and appreciative

sided over the meeting, and after an
30 excellent and appropriate address,in which

with the deadly habit of Iintemperance,

h A COiiRESPONDsNT sends the following
of from West Devonport under date 8th
inst.:-We were a day before the fair, as
the saying is; when it sas assumed in
sat yesterday's note that the Beaconsfield coal
trade was lost to the district. The goode
gs. train came in this evening with a line of
3to ten Irucks from the Russell Colliery, one
'd for the requiremnsnts of our station master,
and nine of six tons each for Beaconsfield.
Int The bagging of coal during the day for Emu
od Bay, and the arrival of nine trucks this
evening, gave the appearance of old times
cr- come again. RIegarding the potatoes, it
may be snaid the "cry is still they come."
The large steanmers nwhich have visited our
ho port to take away this edible have made
es, things lively on the wharf. Some of the
material for the Latrobe waterworks has
in- arrived, and our ubiquitous friend, Mr
nd John Halley, was up in Latrobe with a
gang of his m-n one day this week un
ce, loading trucks for the waterrrorks.
nd PFrrr larcenies are becoming frequent

annexed a lady's lRuesian cloatk,with which
he decamped. He was at once pursued,
but finding the chase too hot for him he
he threw the article over a feonce in Welling
Mr ton-streat, and he was arrested shortly
vs afterwards. Francis Cassidy was also
