Memorable Events.
December 25. Christmas pay.— The epoch called
the Christian Era was first instituted in the sixth
or, according to Gibbon, in the seventh century,
and was confirmed by the Council of 743; but it
was not till about the tenth century that its use
liecame general. It commences in the fourth year
from the birth of Christ, the error having origi
nated in the calculations of Denis, a Scythian
monk, in whose tables the death of the Emperor
Justin L is dated A.D. 527.— Clovis the Great the
founder of the monarchy in France, baptized, with
3,W)ti of his subjects, by St Remi, Bishop of
Rheims, A.D. 498. Clovis was induced to embrace
Christianity partly at the earnest entreaties of his
wife, Clotilda, daughter of Childeric, the deceased
King of the Burjrundians. and partly on account of
his succe-s in the defeat of the Alemanni at
Cologne, where, being in peril of losing the battle,
the tide of victory changed in his favour on his
invoking the Christian's God.— Charlemairne, King
of the Franks, crowned by Pope Leo UI.''Emperor
of the West, A.D. 800. He was a patron of the
arts, founded academies, established couriers for
the conveyance of intelligence, invited to his Court
the most distinguished scholars of the age, com
pleted many important national works, encouraged
agriculture and the useful arts, and rendered his
name immortal by the wisdom of his laws. He
was also great in arras. In 802 he became master
of the whole of the German Empire, and added
a second head to the eagle for his arms, to denote
that the empires of Rome aud Germany were
united in him. Eginhard says that 'This great
Prince was the tallest and strongest man of
his time. He wore only a plain doublet in winter,
made of an otter's skin, a woollen tunic fringed
with silk, and a blue coat or cassock.' Yet on
solemn occasions he appeared in all the splendour
of majesty, and as his person was commanding,
and his countenance an index of his noble and
beneficent niiud, he inspired those who saw him
with sentiments of love, admiration, and respect.

December 2S. Proclamation of the colony by
Governor Hindmarsh, ISMi.— Public holiday.—
Mary II. of England, wife of William III. and
daughter of James IL, died of smallpox, 1694.
Decemlier 29. Henry de la Tour d'Auvergne,
Viscount Turenne, an illustrious French com
mander, effected his famous triumph over the
Germans at Mulliausen, 1674. On the renewal of
the war between France and Holland in 1672, Tu
renne took 40 towns in less than a month, drove
the Elector of Brandenburg to Berlin, and com
pelled the Imperial army to cross the Rhine; but
he sullied his glory by his barbarities in the
Palatine, which country he devastated by fire and
sword.
