A CHEQUE FOR THREEPENCE
Business Man's Quandary.
" MELBOURNE, Sept. 24.-Efforts to
obtain the payment of a debt against a
sequestrated estate have resulted in a
Melbourne warehouseman being faced
with the prospect of losing threepence.
Mr. John W. Fawckner claimed £9 for
goods supplied to the drapery firm of
Coorey and Co. in a country town in
Queensland when the principal of the
firm, Katherine Coorey, became bankr
rupt several years ago. Mr. Fawckner
had written off the amount as a bad
debt, but he received the following com-
munication from the bankrupt's solicitors
recently:-"You are hereby advised that
a first dividend of one-third of a penny
in the pound has been declared. Herewith
please find cheque in your favour for
threepence in respect of your claim
against the estate."
The cheque which was enclosed is pay-
able only through the Sydney branch of
the Commonwealth Bank of Australia,
and If Mr. Fawckner cashes it, he. will
have to pay sixpence in exchange. In
their letter, the solicitors add:-'"No
acknowledgement of this cheque is re-
quired, but it is requested that after en-
dorsement in the space provided on the
face of the cheque, it be paid into the
credit of your bank account as soon as
possible."_
