BATAVIA.
The Sydney Morning Herald of October 1st,
furnishes the following extract from a letter dated
from Batavia, August 11 : — 'We yesterday put up
to auction about 650 oz. of Australian Gold, ex
Champion, from Adelaide. The quality was much
approved of. The greater part was in ingots from
the Adelaide Assay-Office, and nearly all 23 1/8 carats
of fineness. It fetched as nearly as possible £4 per
oz., but from which will have to be deducted 2 s. 6d.
per oz . freight charges, so that the net value is
£3 17s. 6d. The dust sold as well as the ingots,
it being more convenient for re-selling in small
quantities. The ingots, being also something new,
was also against their sale. All Gold sent to this
market should be of good quality, say not less than
23 carats, and the deeper and richer the colour the
better it would be liked.
