SHADE TREES FOR KIRUP.
"Moorhen" writes:-ÍWbuld you re-
commend a quick growing tree suit-
able for shelter, for stock from the
sun in a cultivation paddock, entire-
ly denuded of all euch shelter. »Some
people should be poleaxed or put
inside for their stiupicVty or care-
lessness in depriving stock of all
shelter, in good feed paddocks;
Please advise when such trees should
be planted and where obtainable.
I consider the most suifahie trees to
P"!?niy shade quickly at Kirup would ¡be
<lmr.eT marri gum (red gum) or wattles.
Near the Kirup station anti in the town
there are fine specimens of wattles and
seed can easily he obtained from there,,
and if rhe trees are protected they will
grow big enough to provide shelter in a
few years. Seedlings of marri gums can
be obtained in the forest and transplant-
ed in thc autumn, and tkry will quickly
grow into big trees. In moving the trees
1 do not think it wise to take any but
very small ones, say, no more than 3 to
«3 in, high. They are more easily re-
moved without damage to the tap roots.
These .best time to plant is iu the autumns
when the first rains come. It is quite
likely that yon will be able to obtain
seedling wattles under some of thc trees
near Kirup townsite. Oaks grow well
and fairCly quickly in that "part fo the
State. Pines also grow we'l and there j
are a number of examples to be seen. j
