CROP ANS STOCK REPORTS.
.SEASON 191617.
The Government Statistician, Mr. Mal-
colm A. C. Fraser/ has received the fol«
lowing reports from the police juicers
named in connection with the annual
collection of .the crop and stock statistics
for the season 1916-17:
Subiaeo.^Constable E. Machin (March
3), for Subiaco, West Subiaco, Karrakatta,
Jolimont, and Nedlands: This-district ia
purely a residential one, there being no
market gardens, and only one orchard,
the majority of people only growing
enough for their own uso. There are two
dairies in this district, whose stock looked
well, and the dairies were '«lean and)
Well Jiept. There was an increase of
about 3,000 poultry throughout the dis-
trict, and 1 heard no complaint about tick
or any other disease being amongst them.'
The number of hands employed on the
chief industries have decreased owing to.
lack of work through the war. The num-
ber of stock is about on a par with last
year's returns. ' Buildings are steadily .
being erected throughout this district, and
the population is iticreasing,"
Bullfinch.-Coustable J. G. Woodhouse
(February 27) : Feed ie plentiful, but water
is scarce, owing to the small rainfall last
winter. The stock are all looking wei}.
No agricultural and pastoral fanning is
carried on in this district. Comparing
last year's figures with the present, there
is an increase in horses, and a decrease
in cattle- The reason of the decrease is
! owing to one of the settlers having re
[ moved all his cattle out of this district.
Leederville.-Constable J. McLennon
(March 4)~: Osborne Park is nearly all cut *
up into ' small holdings, from 2 to 20
! acres, used for market gardens, dairy
1 farms, and poultry raising. Market gar-
dens have had a fair season, but prices
have been very low all the year- The po-
tato crop averaged nearly *5 tons to the
acre, but average price per ton was about
£6 10., which barely pay expenses. Dairy
farmers have bad" a good year, as feed
has been cheap for the wholo season, and
caitle have done welk Poultry farmers
have not had a very good season, as wjieat
has been very dear throughout the whole
yeal-.
Cottesloe Beach.-Constable Ii. H.
Tucker (February, 28) : In comparing t he
present, year's figures with those of last
year, I find there, is very little difference.
All the cattle arc in splendid condition,
being in .most cases hand fed. There
have been some splendid results from tba
fruit trees grown in this district, owing
principally to the fruit fly pest not hav-
ing been so destructive as in previous
years.
Donnybrook-Constable A- S. Richard-
son (March 12), Area« 4+1/80, 414 A/40,
and 414 C/40: The seaton under review -
compares 'favourably with previous sea-
sons. The ceTeal crops in this sub-district,
principally oaten, most of- which have been
cut for hay have provided very satisfac-
tory yields. The potato crops in some
instances ¡have *becn disappointing, anti
some failures have been recorded, owing
lo adverse weather conditions. The mar-
ket for the general crop of potatoes ha«
also b?en unsatisfactory to growers- There
has been a very heavy crop of stone fruit
this season, and in consequence Jhe mar-
kets were glutted, and very low prices
were obtained. In fact, the fruit, grow-
ers ore having a bad time all round, as
i they have been finding great difficulty in
securing shipping space for the export of
r apples, ßtock generally «re in good con-
dition, and feed is fairly plentiful, whilst
the recent rains will give the grass a good
fits rt before the cold weather sets in.
Dairying is steadily growing in this sub-
district, and tbe majority of those who '
are turniug their attention to this parti-
cular industry, are well satisfied with je-
suits, although very few keep accurate
records, tend only estimates uro conse-
quently given. The same remark applies
to tb» production of eggs and poultry,
where also only - estimâtes ave recorded.
The rainfall recorded at Donnybrook for
1916 was 3,617 points,
