Do lt Yourself. -
"WORRIED PARENT" writes:
We have a district problem-our
adolescent youth. There is so little
for them to do in country centres.
Dont you think the Government should
be approached with a view to taking up
the matter of establshing recreational
centres or coping with the problem in
some way?
No I do not. It seems to have slipped
your memory that the Government is at
present engaged in war, the successful
conclusion of which means far more to
the adolescent youth of this country than
the establishment of Government recrea-
tional centres. Instead of rushing to the
Government for aid, snap out of it and
do something about it yourself. Adoles-
cent youth, whether in town or country
is a problem, but if adults did more to
help them and spent less time criticising,
the problem would be less acute. Rustle
around, collect up a committee and form
a club for the boys and girls-start it off,
then hand it over to them to run for
themselves, a little self-imposed responsi-
bility will be appreciated and you will
find them more capable than you expect.
Do not make the mistake of planning
club activities along juvenile lines, or
the whole plan will be a flop. Remember,
too, that people who use their hands in
constructive work are always the hap-
piest, but, being young, they will also
appreciate a certain amount of unadult-
erated "frivol."
