PROGRAMME ENLARGED.
Roads and Harbours.
A further announcement of relief work
approved by the Government was mad
last week by the Minister for Works (Mi
A. McCallum). In addition to the wort
already outlined, improvements to th
Bunbury Harbour at a cost A
£160,000 are to be undertakei
a schedule of road works at .
cost of £61,000 will be embarked upo
and the work of constructing bridges ove
the Helena Uiver at Guildford and th
Swan River near the Perth racecourse wi
be continued.
The new works decided upon definitelj
to commence at an early date, iuvolv
a total expenditure of £246,950. If Mi
McCallum can make satisf actor
financial arrangements with the Colli
Municipal Council, he will proceed witl
the construction of a gravitation wate
supply for that town.. This work is est:
mated to cost £32,000, bringing the tote
expenditure to £278,950. Above thi
figure, Geraldton harbour dredging wil
cost £400 a week and river reclamatioi
near the Perth Causeway £1,000 a month
At present, Mr. McCallum is not in
position to estimate the total cost of th
last-mentioned works, this depending oi
their duration.
In making his first announcement oi
Thursday, Mr. McCallum made it clea
that the works listed would not provid
employment for additional men, the objec
being to replace other works now ter
m ina ting, thus keeping engaged 600 mci
who otherwise would be thrown on tin
labour market within about a week. O
the works lie mentioned last week, teh
road construction will employ until th
end of next month al) the men now oi
this type of work and the bridge build
ing will safeguard employment for tin
workers concerned. In regard to tin
Bunbury harbour ?improvements, about 61
men are at present engaged at thc har
bour and it-is expected that the, numbei
will gradually be increased to 100.
Estimated Cost.
The complete list of new works and tin
estimated cost of them are as follow:
£
Bunbury harbour improve-
ments- . 160,000.
Road construction. 61,900
Collie water supply. 32,000 .
Geraldton harbour dredging . x 400
Swan River reclamation .... x 250
Fremantle fish jetty Work .. 650
Waroona drain construction . 16,000
Railway re-sleepering. 7,000

redin . 1,400
x A week,
j The construction of a bridge over thc
Swan River near the Perth racecourse;
which was begun by thc last Government,
was severely criticised by Mr. McCallum.
His statement was as follows:-"In ad-
dition to the new works already
outlined, I have examined those now
in hand and Cabinet has decided to con-
tinue the work of improving the Bunbury
harbour in order to eliminate the major
.causes of the present heavy" siltation
which, unless arrested, will make it dif-
ficult to maintain the harbour econo-
mically. This work will include an ex-
tension of the breakwater and the con-
struction of a groyne, the estimated cost
of which is £160,000. About 60 men are
at present ' employed and this number
will ? gradually be increased to approxi-
mately 100.
Bridge Building Criticised.
"As far as the work on the two metro-
politan bridges ÍB concerned-pne over the
Helena River at Guildford and the other
over the Swan River near the Perth race-
courses-^ -have examined these proposi-
tions. Tlie bridge over the Helena River
at'-Guildfövd appears to be the sounder
proposition of the two. The engineering
estimate was £9,000 to put the existing
bridge in proper order as against £12,000
for : the' new work. Instructions have
beeb issued to continue with the new
work. The bridge near the racecourse
over the.Swan River I regard in a dif-
ferent light. As far as I am able to
judge, the only useful purpose this bridge
will serve -will be to givé the residents
of Bayswater and the upper end of May-
lands a short cut to the racecourse. Apart'
from that, I see no useful purpose what-
ever to be served by it. The estimated
cost of this work is £20,000, and only
the fact that the work is so far advanced
Îirevents me from stopping it. Cabinet
ms . reluctantly agreed that the work be
[proceeded with. .
