iVechanics' Institute.
T HE COMMITTEE of MANAGERS,of
this INSTITUTION, fully convinced
that the possession of a building would be a
mean of advancing the interests of the institu
tion and stamping It with a permanent character,
have determined to appeal to meimbers and
friends of the institution for the means of
accomplishing its erection, and the present
time is considered the most fitting," from the
absence of any special call on the liberality of
the public purse.
It is contemplated by the committee that a
building shall be erected which shall be fully'
adequate to the carrying oit the objects of a
mechanics' institution in all its details of
lectures, classes, library, museum, &c., and
although they do not expect to be able to
accomplish the entire at the present time,
their plans will be so arranged that they can
be carried out to full completion as the cir-
cumstances of the institution will admit.
A gentleman of well known professional
skill is prepared to submit a plan of a building,
the completion. of which would require an
outlay of from :£1800 to £2000.. .lt'would
cover the area of the allotment of.gr6t'nd the'
property of the institutiori, kindly granted by
His Excellency Sir William Denison, at the
corner of St. John and Cameron-streets, and
would be an ornament to the street as well as
a fitting neighbour for the adjoining Scotch
Church.
The building would be so.arranged that it
'could be erected at different periods, and as a
reading room, (which might be used as an
exchange) library, and committee rooms, are'
the most needed, they would be the first to be
built; it is considered the outlay for these
would require £700 to £800, and .for this sum'
the managers now make an appeal.
The funds of the institution will furnish the
sum of one hundred guineas to head the sub
scription list, and it is expected that the
liberality of the public will supply the remain
der, either by donations or subscriptions in
monthly or quarterly instalments.
Subscribers of £20 in town to the building
fund, and £10 subboribers in the country, will
be constituted life members.
The following gentlemen have been appointed'
a committee to obtain subscriptions:
S. E. Harvey William Tyson
A. Learmonth V. W. Giblin

H. P. Kane W. B. Dean
John Denney A. J. Green
