Australian Literature
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S
ENCOURAGEMENT
Canberra, May 31.
Proposals for an increase by a
substantial amount in the annual
expenditure by the Commonwealth
Government to encourage the de
velopment of Australian literature,
will be favourably considered by the
Federal Cabinet in the near future.
d eputation of Australian writers
the Prime Minister, Mr. Lyons,
-night pointed out that lack of an
extensive market in Australia had
reacted severely on Australian
authors and playwrights.
The deputation suggested that
£16,000 a yeara should be voted to
encourage literature. Among the
proposals made were that the print
ing of Australian books. in Austra~
lia should be subsidised, that a
publio award of £1000 for outstand
ing work of literature should be
made, that the scale of literary pen,
sions should be greatly increased,
nd that dramatic productions
ould be encouraged. It is unlikely
hat the plan will be accepted in
its entirety.
