Threat to Canton
WARSHIPS OFF THE COAST
London, June 1.
The diplomatic correspondent of
the Associated Press writes:-
"Does the a ssemblage of Japanese
warships at the mouth of the Pearl
River foreshadow the menacing of
Hong Kong and foreign interests
in the Far East or is it t:e p;:l?Ide
to a mass attack on Canton I The
answe; to this question is anxiously
awaited here." "
It will be recalled that earlier ad
vices expressed the fear that
Japan's inability to make headway
against the Chinese might lead to
far-reaching Japanese military and'
naval measures, conceivably en
dangering foreign interests and
creating a situation to which Bri-I
tain certainly could not remain in
diflerent.
"The reconstruction of the Japan
ese Cabinet is regarded as being as
sociated with the intention to in
tensify Japan's campaign, though
lately there has been some indica
tion that the Japanese are anxious
to avoid further provocation
against Britain."
