TWO BAD CHARACTERS
Vº OMAN. USED AS. DECOY.
BOTH SENT TO GAOL.
Mr. W. A. G. " Walter, R.M.. who
sat in the. Kalgoorlie Police Court
yesterday,: heard the details of a
charge against William Alfred
Lamphce (85), formerly a ,fireman
in the, navy, of having takeji a
watch, a chain, a sovereign case,
two finger rings, and the sum of £9
from Johann Julius Warneski, a
fettler on the Lakeside woodline.
Detective-Sergt. O'Brien prose
cuted. Accused, who pleaded not
guilty, conducted his own, defence.
Warneski told the court that on
December 30 he met the accused
and Ada Murray. He accepted an
invitation to theii' abode in Wil
son-street. He was under the in
fluence -of drink.. He calculated
that he had- about £7 in. cash. Both
rings- bore . his initials Aiiother
man, "Scotty," a friend, went with
him to the .house. When he . got
there, the. accused pushed him onto
a stretcher, took his boots off, and
told him :to have .a sleep. Accused
went outside. Later witness got up
to go outside, and accused knock
ed him down. - Accused then knock-.
ed him down a second time. Two
men jumped on him, and he felt
them- take- the rings "off 'his fingers
and go through his pockets. Wit
nea? found that his property was
missing after he got away from the
house.
'Detective-Sergt. O'Brien told the
court that, in: consideration of re
ducing the charge .from one of
stealing from the person to one of
,stealing, the accused gave infor
mation regarding the rings, which
were subsequently recovered from
a barman at Boulder.
David Grant, a' returned soldier,
previously referred to as "Scotty,"
-said that when they went to the
accused's place they had a couple
of drinks. Witniess left to go home,
but returned fifteen minutes latei
in order to get his hat, which he
had left behind. He saw two men
on a vacant allotment and went
over to them. Accused there hand
ed him a watch and chain and told
him to keep them. The following
day witness handed them to Det.
Se.rgt. McConnell.
Det.-Sergt. McConnell gave evi
dence as to the arrest of the accus
ed.

secution.
Accused made a statement in his
own defense that on the Monday
night he. had 9/ in his pocket. He
had, got the money from some
"pals" on' H.M.S. Sydney, who
were passing through Kalgoorlie.
Warneski ; ushed his company c't
him, and accompanied him to his
home. Warneski 'vanted to go
outside but fell down. Witness was
going to his assistance, and then
he saw Grant sitting on him.
This closed the case for the .de
fence.
Mr. Walter said that Lamphee
was a dangerous man, and sentenc
ed him to six months' imprison
nient. He advised Grant to keep
better company in future.
Lamphee and the woman, Ada,
Murray, were then charged with
being idle and disorderly persons,..
The detectives gave evidence that
Lanmphee used Murray as a, decoy
for other men.
The magistrate awarded Lamphes
an additional six months' imprison.
