WHEAT MARKETING.
POOLING PROPOSAL.
Bill Before Senate.
CANBERRA, June 19.— The debate was
commenced in the Senate to-day on the
motion for the second reading of the
Wheat Marketine Bill which, provides for
the establishment of a compulsory Com
mon-wealth Wheat Pool.
The Leader of the Government (Sena
tor Daly) said that, although a propor
tion of the farmers was unfortunately
against the measure, the majority were
wholeheartedly behind it. The Ministry
was merely giving effect to their wishes.
The price of Australian wheat under the
present marketing system was unduly low,
because there was too much competition
in selling and too little in buying. With
only one selling agent for their wheat it
was obvious that the farmers would com
mand high prices in the markets of the
world. The Bill had been framed care
fully to prevent interstate dumping, price
cutting, or anything of a similar nature
likely to 'interfere with, the operation of
the pooling system.
The debate was adjourned.
