POULTRY.
Judges.- — Games. Mr. John Robertson;
Heavy Soft Feathered Varieties. Mr.
C. W. Johnson; Light Soft Feathered
Varieties. Mr. R. A. Dustinc: Utility
utasscs, Air. Al. Love.
Despite adverse conditions, the display
-jf -poultry was particularly good, both
tfrom the standpoint of numbers aud the
general quality of the exhibits. The will :
..appeal poultry-keeping makes was again
demonstrated, by the number of fanciers,
representing all classes of the community.
.While some fanciers have given up it was
interesting to note that there were a num
ber of new exhibitors.
Thepeuning arrangements were unsatis
factory, as this exhibit has quite outgrown
the accommodation in the pavilion. This
has necessitated the showing of many birds |
?on. the ''double decker' system which Is
not satisfactory. However, at the present
time, fanciers are prepared to put up with
inconvenience, with the hope that
when conditions, improve they will
have a new- pavilion. Mr. J. Siddons, as
sisted by Mr. McCavana were in charge
of this section, and did all in their power
to assist exhibitors. The West Australian
Poultrj' Association as usual supplied the
office team for writing up the award cards
and these were all ready in position short
ly after the completion of the judging.
Mr. John Robertson was very pleased
with the game section as a whole, which
he- describes as excellent. For average
quality the Malays showed an improve
ment on those shown recently. H. E.
Drew scored both firsts in this breed. In
- dians made up big classes, without one bad
one. Rev. N. McDonald winning both
firsts, the' hen getting the cha-npion award
for game females. Old English Game wer-2
of- average quality, the judge said, with
nothing outstanding, yet they took a good
deal of sorting out'. The worst fault was
deficiency of chest and shoulders. J. F.
Vaughan won in black reds and Cookson
and McCavana in any other colour. Mr.
Robertson was particularly pleased with
'the British game, the Game Breeders' Cup
going to a Duckwing shown by If. Hether
mgton. of Collie. This is a well merited
honour and game fanciers generally will
congratulate this keen breeder. Cookson
and McCavana and M. Cosgrove were also
prize winners in this section. G. Gloe won
with Sumatra and H. Drew with Austra
lian Game. The bantam classes filled well
and competition was keen. Cookson and
McCavana are prominent in Old Eng
lish, the blue red male being singled out
by the judge for special attention. J. N.
Guthrie, Lethbridge and Son, J. Siddons,
M.. Cosgrove, and S. Bluek also showed
winners in the bantam section.
In the classes judged by him were many
birds which pleased Mr. C. W. Johnson,
who has just returned from the Adelaide
Royal Show. He said that our winning
Rhode Island Reds _ compared well with
the winners in Adelaide excelling especially
in tail colour. The same applied to the
light Sussex, which he considered 'was
quite up to the South Australian standard.
la an even class of Rhode Island Red
males the Rev. ,N. McDonald won first and
champion male, J. A. Rogers, of Northam,
. gaining a similar distinction with females,
Balgay Poultry- Farm won both firsts with
Rose Comb Reds. Lethbridge and Son won
the two firsts, and two champions with
rocks. J. Gloe won first, champion and
Sussex Cup with his male, Rocky Ridge
Ranch winning first and champion with
females, in the light variety, and two firsts
in the A.O.V. variety. In silver Wyan
dottes A. Corker won in the
male section, and B. D. Hooper
in the female section. This bird
was also awarded the champion card
for female Wyandottes. In whites E. R.
Martin scored, the cock gaining the cham
pion award. J. Gloe won both firsts in
Langshans. In Orpingtons Lethbridge and
Son were the principal winners, the black
cock winning ' the award for best heavy
breed other than game. H. Chivers scored
with white males. R. A. Dustina: won with
Barnevelders and J. Sharpies with Fave
volles. Many good birds are on view in the
farmers' selling class pens, but Mr. John
son stated that these classes should be re
stricted to utility birds.
Mr. Dusting, who judged the light
breeds considered the Anconas only fair.
for the most part being too small and fail
ing in leg colour. Rev.N. McDonald scor
ed'in this variety. Leghorns were only fair,
the judge considering that most of the
whites were lacking in Leghorn charac
teristics. Andalusians were onlv moderate,
but the Minorcas were good. The winning
male shown by the veteran Minorca ex
hibitor, A. Savage, is a typical bird with
good, lobes and a prominent eye. The judge
considered that the female class was n
hard class to balance as there was not to--
much between any of them. In this sec
tion a new fancier in the person of Dr.
H. R. Pearson won with a pullet in fine
bloom, of good body type and neat hend
points.
With the exception of the white India u
runners the ducks are disnppointin'
Mr. Love considered the present ex
hibits to. be' the best collection of utility
birds that he has seen here. The blue rib
bon in this section went to a white leghorn
hen shown by the Rev. N. McDonald. The
judge said that he was pleased with her size
type and bloom. J. Glow was the most
successful exhibitor in black orpingtons.
his team winning three firsts. Mr. Lovr
was very pleased with R. A. Dusting'**
R.IJt. male. Another section that plea-e-I
were the utility Minorcas. J. Gloe and. Dr.
Pearson showing winners in this variety.
Anconas, Rocks and Wyandottes made up
interesting classes.
