S LU,-Having now obtained my licence
without a dissenting voice, (Thanks
to those Gentlemen on the Bench who did
me the justice to admit that my Establish-
ment was one of the best conducted inns
in the Colony,) it now devolves on me
to explain why the consideration of my
application was only disposed of yesterday
instead of on the General Licencing Day.
Incredible as it may appear to the
Colony at large and to the Trade in particular,
I was actually opposed by a
Magistrate sitting on the Bench whose
name then and not figures in the Insolvent
Court. And on the following grounds,
viz. That I assaulted a female nim sim
in his presence, and although I fully com-
pensated that person, I afterwards spoke
in the most improper manner of him.
This Magistrate concluded his address
to the Bench with a request that they
would support him in his position, adding
that he should not have been insolvent but
for me.
It is scarcely necessary to mention the
name of this Magistrate, but for the information
of those who do not read the
Insolvent Court notices in your paper,
I may say that he hay Les himself Edward
William Birchell Butcher, Esq.
I protested against the insolvent whose
discharge I am (through my solicitor)
opposing in the Insolvent Court, from
sitting on the Bench to decide on my ap¡
plication, and I felt that the Bench ought
as one man to have cried shame on this
attempt to injure me, but His Worship
merely adjourned the hearing until
Monday the 5th instant.
As the proceedings in the Insolvent
Court are still undisposed of I have no
right to say w but I think this insolvent
should get at the Commissioner's hands.
The insolvent swears to assets amounting
to over £1100 and to debts over £1000, and
yet offers his creditors two shillings and
sixpence in the pound. If this is all I am
to get towards my debts it won't be much
help towards my licence.
Yours very obediently,
DANIEL MURPHY.
