REPARATIONS.
THE FRENCH DEMAND.
Need of a Working Agreement.
LAUSANNE. June 27.— The fate of the
reparations conference will probably be
decided on Tuesday or Wednesday, when
the French Prime Minister (M. Herriot)
and the German Chancellor (Captain von
Pa pen) will resume the conversations
which took place on Friday.
French and German experts have been
at work during the week-end upon plans
for monetary stabilisation, the abolition
of trade restrictions and similar problems,
and the question of the compensation to
be offered by Germany in the event of
the cancellation of reparations.
The French delegation is now convinced
of the necessity of a working agreement
between France and Germany, while Italy
is insistent on the necessity for some de
finite solution at the present conference.
The ehiet problem is to obtain such a
bond from Germany as will satisfy the
French demand for something of nego
tiable value.
If Germany grants compensation to
France or any other country, however,
Italy will demand her share. The Italian
Foreign Minister (Signor Grandi) has
handed the President (Mr. Ramsay Mac
Donald) a memorandum to this effect.
It is understood that the German Gov
ernment hus given Captain von Papen
full powers to deal with the situation at
Lausanne.
