SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
ADELAIDE, May 4.
Cold, wet weather has continued through-
out the past week. Adelaide had a couple
oE inches of rain and the country par-
ticipated in the splendid downfall.
Somo time ago a syndicate obtained a
lease of Bathurst Island in the Northern
Territory, in order to experiment witli tho
{flowing of rubber, but after a few half-
hearted attempts abandoned the vontnre.
A maa named Gunn, well-known in the
Territory, has, however, taken up a tract of
country north-west of Port Darwin, with
tho delcrnsination to thoroughly test the
rubbei-growing capabilities of tbo country.
Tho foundation stono of the ne«- Infec-
tious Disoase wing of the Adelaide Hos-
pital was laid to-diy by the Governor,
Lord .Tennyson. Under the stono was
placed copies of the local papers, speci-
mens of the various silver coins, bottles
of wine and wheat and a doc-umont setting
forth when and by whom the stone wore
laid, the names of the mern tero of the
Ministry, etc. Tii8 new wards próvido
accommodation for 30 patients.
The Swedish consul at Melbourne has
written to the Marine Board asking for
permission tor the baiqne Solverg to pro-
ceed tbilher without making íejiairs at this
port. The barque arrived recently with a
Heavy cargo of timber, in a strained and
leaky condition. Despite the fact that the
fcarqno is Swedish property, that no
British seamon are carried by her, and an
offer was made to proceed to Melbourne in
ballast only, the required permission to
fail was refused by the board.
NEW SOUTH WALES.
SYDNEY, May 4.
The City Council is cabling to the
Agent-General to ascertain the terms on
which the principal electrical iirms . of
Great Britain will tend an electrical engi-
neer to Sydney to prepare pians^and an
estimate of the cost of installing tho elec-
tric light.
VICTORIA.
MELBOUKNE, May 4.
At tho Melbourne Police Court to-day
an Italian sailor belonging to the ship
Gastino Casabano was sentencod to a
week's imprisonment for refusing duty.
Defendant pleaded that he was too ill to
work, but the Bench considered that he
was a malingerer.
A refilled looking woman, Mrs. Mary
Watts, who appeared at the City Court last
Monday on a chaige of shoplifting, was
dealt with to-day. It was stated that the
offence was committed 'during a mental
aberration, as she ivas in very comfartable
circumstances. She was fined £5.
A few days ago Mr. Justice Hood ordered
a lad named Alfred Morey, convicted of
attempted criminal assault on a young
girl to be imprisoned for a month and to
receive ten strokes of the birch. A peti-
tion was subsequently presented to the
Governor, praying that the birching be
remitted, as the lad was subject to fits and
previously had been of excellent charac-
ter. The petition was granted.
