THE WINE DUTIES.
AND IMPORTERS OPINION.
LONDON, May 4.
Mr. Burgoyne, the well-known
dealer in Australian wines, in a
letter to the Daily Graphic, declares
that Sir Michael Hicks-Beach's refusal
to concede a preferential duty to
Australian wines will prove the salvation
of the industry in Australia.
The increased tax will, he says,
prove an effective barrier to the importation
of those common wines
which have been bringing the trade
into disrepute.
He further states that the new
duty So far from checking the trade
has, on the contrary, already given it
an extraordinary impetus.
