VALVE RESEARCH.
To the private mortorist, whose interest
in automotive engineering begins and
ends with a desire that his car should
function faultlessly so as not to trouble
him in any way, it mat be interesting to
note that when car-selling concerns refer
to "research" it is not just merely propa-
ganda to impress intending buyers. Here
is an instance of the lengths to which
automotive research is carried. In Eng-
land the Department of Scientific and In-
dustrial Research Recently made a special
report on the surging of engine valve
springs. The object of the research was
to determine the synchronpus speeds of
vibration for given conditions of load and
tappet clearance, and then to measure the
extension and compression of a coil add-
tional to that imposed, by the normal cam
lift.
