BUNBURY REQUIREMENTS.
MEETING OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Bunbury, April 20.
A meeting of the Bunbury Chamber of
Commerce was held yesterday evening.
The main business was the appointment
of a deputation to represent to the Premier
matters which have been considered by the
Chamber, and which it is felt have not
received satisfactory consideration by
the Government. It was decided to
appoint a representative deputation, and
to invite the co-operation of the municipal
council and other bodies, in addition
to the representatives from the leading
timber mills. The main subject
to be laid before the Premier
is the necessity of constructing
approach to the jetty capable of bearing an
engine. It was pointed out that an expansion
of the timber trade of the South
West is likely to immediately take place
in consequence of the introduction of a
large amount of capital into the business,
but that the business was crippled because
of the present inadequate shipping
arrangements. This was claimed to be a
matter of vital importance to the district,
as the export trade could not expand until
the jetty was improved. It was also decided
to represent to the Government the
necessity of working the Government
mine on the Collie coalfield. The speakers
blamed the Government for granting continued
exemptions, which had crippled the
field, and stated that the only way to
create the confidence of capitalists was for
the Government to work their mine. Sir
John had some time ago made a definite
promise that this would be done. The
deputation, it was urged, should ask for
this to be carried into effect.
The deputation will proceed to Perth as
soon as can possibly be arranged with the
Premier.
