A SYDNEY FIRE.
Man's Fatal Collapse.
Sydney. May 31.
An outbreak of fire occurred at tbe
premises of Victory Lubricates Ltd., in
Harris-street. Ultimo, ou Sa-iurday morn
ing. The building, which was of two
floors, and which contained a .arge stock
of oils and greases, was severely damag
ed by fire, and the manager, Frederick
Chambers (52). of Haberfield, was over
come with -shock .and colla-pspd in the
burning building, lie died on his way to
the hospital.
Smoke was seen 6ssuing from the
premises shortly after 9 o'ejock. As fire
men from the Pyrraont station were no
ticeable in -the distance, Mr. Chambers
rushed from the burning building, waved
his hands to the oncoming firemen, and
shouted out 'Hurry uip, hurry up.'1 He
then dashed into the burning tmiTding
again. When Donnis Bolger. a fireman,
went. 'Into the 'building Jie discovered Mr.
Chambers Ijdng on his lrack in the man
ager's office. His mouth was oprn, but
whpn spoken to he failed to answer.
The cause of the outbreak is unknown,
but k is thought that it originated on the
ground floor among a number of tins and
barrels of oil. Dense. oi!y smoke issued
from the premises, and although the fire
men had a difficult tssk, they master
ed the situation inside 'an hour. The
damage is estimated at several thousands
of pounds.
