STRATHALBYN.

February 12.
On Thursday last a lecture on "Burns as a Poet"
was delivered by the Rev. John Gardner in Messrs.
Walker & Co.'s large store. During the evening the
rev. gentleman recited several of Burns's poems in
his able and masterly style. The audience, which j
was numerous, were highly gratified with the even-1
ing's entertainment. At the dose of the lecture the,,
magic lantern was exhibited, to the no small delecta
tion of the juveniles. The proceedings concluded
with a vote of thanks to the lecturer. I understand i
that the proceeds of the lecture are to be applied
towards roofing the manse belonging to tha Free
Presbyterian Church.
At the Police Court on Tuesday a man named W.
Biggins was brought up on a charge of beating bis
wife. He was found guilty and sentenced to one
month's imprisonment, and was bound over to keep
the peace for six months.
The New Zealand gold-fields seem the principal
topic of conversation here. Several persons from t his
neighborhood have left and are leaving for that £1
Dorado.
