VASSE.
(From a Correspondent.)
Wa have lately had a visit from Colonel Bruce
and his son-in-law, Dr Galbraith, to inquire into
old Hurford's death. I suppose these gentleman
were sent down at the expense of tho government,
which I am rather surprised at while strict economy
seems the order of tbe day, and considering we have
plenty of efficient Magistrates in tbe neighborhood,
to investigate this or any other case that may arise.
I cannot think what the authorities above were
about to send down here the Staff Officer of Pen-
sioners, a gentleman with little or no experience in
such matters, while we have Magistrates here and at
Banbury who could have done without bim; and
Dr Gslbrai'h, a Medical Officer in no way whatever
Identified with colonial service, while there it a
colonial Surgeon stationed at Banbury fully compe-
tent to have answered any purpose for which Dr
Galbraith was sent down. I should not have said
so much but that I feel a great slight has been
passed upon the district and neighbourhood, and I
think it right the public should know our feelings
on the subject.
