The London herald' (Labour) says
that the Admiralty authorises have
given an unqualified denial to tie reports
as- to heavy desertions having taken nlace
in Australia from the- Jdmptre Special
Service Squadron. The paper quotes a
high official as saying that he has heard
nothing to confirm Press reports on the
subject, and that there is always a cer
tain number of desertions when vessels
of the Navy touch at countries like- Aus
tralia and America.
In the Maryiebone Police Court (Lon
don) to-day Robert Hftynes (20), a
labourer, was charged with vagrancy. A
police constable said that he -found
Haynes sleeping in a street. The ac
cused had been out of employment for
nine months, and he had been sleeping
out for 13 days, and been without food
for three days. His1 father, mother, and
three sisters were killed in an explosion,
and four of his brothers fell in the war.
When he tried to find his two aunts he
ascertained that they had been killed in
a bomb explosion.
Inquiries show that the report con
cerning Leonard Lawrence, of the Young
Australia League, is -substantially cor
rect.
[It was reported from London on Mon
day last that Lawrence, who belongs to
Sydney, was walking home in London on
Sunday niffht. when he was sandbagged
near the -llounslow Barracks. In the
struggle Lawrence and his assailant fell.
Lawrence escaped, and be was picked up
afterwards by a policeman. He was in a
semi-conscious condition, but he was not
injured or robbed. Subsequently Cap
tain C. A. B. Brough, who is in command
of die Y.A.L. tourists, declared that the
report was without foundation.]

'After having tried for twenty years
to make diamonds, and spent about
£20,000 in experiments. I have come to
the conclusion that nobody has ever made
a diamond,' said Sir Charles Parson*,
in the course of a speech at a meeting
of the Royai Microscopical Society. He
added that it was his opinion that the
claims of Sir William Crookes and the
French chemist, Moissan, were mistaken.
