RAIN MARS QUEENSTOWN CARNIVAL
Kelly Wins Gift Brilliantly from Back Mark
Cycling Double by Latrobe Rider
B, A. Page in 220 yds. Has Second Success
Threatening skies in the morning, followed by light rain
and generally miserable conditions during the afternoon,
although marring to a great extent the glamour of the final
day of: the annual "Back to Queenstown" athletic carnival,
"held yesterday, under the auspices of the Queenstown Labour
Day Athletic Club, did not discourage a large crowd, which
paid £140 for admission. The Queenstown recreation ground
was again the scene of a comprehensive programme of .
I cycling, chopping, running, and whippet racing events. The
I gate takings for the three days amounted to £249, which is a
record.
' Thrilling finishes were again the order of the day. L. W.
Kelly, the Launceston footballer, brilliantly won the Queens-
town Gift, over 130 yards. and B. A. Page, also of Launceston,
followed his win in the quarter-mile on Saturday by taking
the 220 yards Handicap in convincing style. Against a strong
band of prominent axemen, M. Coy, of Queenstown, had a
meritorious win in the Eight Hour Day Chop, and the 12-inch
standing event went to A. Thomas, of the Huon. J. Hicks,
the Latrobe wheelman, completed a fine double by winning
thc H miles cycle race and the three miles scratch event, and ,
E. D. O'Grady, of Queenstown, besides securing places in the
bigger races, Avon the Mt. Lyell employees' race easily.

B. A. Page, the winner of the 440yds.
Handicap on Saturday, had a well
merited win in the 220yds. from 19yds.
Page won comfortably, and completed
a most successful meeting.
Tho Eight Hour Day Chop attracted
30 starters. M. Coy, of Queenstown,
was conceded three seconds by the
scratch man (J. Scott), and chopped
powerfully to carry off the event in the
fino time of 40 3-5s. Logs of 40in. girth
were used. Coy was trained by the
former Queenstown champion, Poter
de Graff, who won the event in 1929 and
1930. The 1ft. standing chop provided
keen compétition, and, although the
winner, A. Thomas, of the Huon, won
by six blows, not moro than two blows
separated the next three men.
HICKS' FINE DOUBLE.
The cycling was again spectacular,
and provided several thrilling finishes.
J. Hicks (Latrobe) played a promin-
ent part, winning the li miles event In
an exciting finish by half a wheel. He
also rode in dashing fashion to take the
"A"-' grade division of the: three-miles
event. Doyle," ^rif Launceston, and
O'Grady also figured prominently.
Whippet racing again figured prom-
inently, and 15 dogs owned by members
of tho Queenstown Whippet Racing
Club gave a spectacular display of
hurdling over 120 yards. Dark Lady,
owned by Mr. A. Nankivell, from the
scratch mark of four yards, left the
field standing in tho final to win by iiva
lengths.
RECORD GATE TAKINGS.
.. Sufficient indications of Hie keen In-
terest fostered In the annual carnival
this year may bo gauged from the fact
that the gate takings are a record. On
Saturday £73 was taken. The follow-
ing day provided a record of £35, and,
despite the adverse conditions which
prevailed yesterday, £140 12s. 6d. was
taken, making a. total of £249 ,7s. The
efficient organisation for which the
club is renowned is exemplified by tito
fact that, despite tho weather, the last
ovent.of tho day was completed four
minutes ahead of time.
