Britain In Unique
Position! To Preserve
Peace, Says Attlee
SCARBOROUGH, Monday.
The British people are in a unique position
to preserve the world's peace between the
extremes of Communism on one hand and
the extremes of capitalism on the other," the
Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Clement Attlee,
told a British Labour Party rally here last
night.
"We have been in the front
line a long time and we do not
easily get the wind up," Mr.
Attlee said.
Outlining the benefits, he
claimed could be gained from
"co-existence" between East and
West, he said the Labour Party
t believed that with the stumbling
block of the Korea war now removed,
there was nothing to 'bar
Communist China's admission to
the United Nations.
Mr. Attlee said "The Chinese
fire afraid of being attacked by
America. The Americans are
afraid of being attacked by the
Chinese. There you have the
picture of a world full of dangerous
weapons, with great
nations whose minds are turned
to fear.
"Surely it is worthwhile to try
to make an effort to break down,
that fear."
Mr. Attlee said of Formosa:
"I can understand the Americans'
apprehension. I can understand
American emotion
about it. But in foreign affairs
emotionalism is very dangerous.
"From the Chinese point of
view they have had a civil war.
They won't. They drove Chiang
Kai-shek and the old gang who
were a pretty corrupt going
right off the mainland into Formosa,
where they are comforted
and protected by another power.
"The Chinese are now afraid
that their regime might be attacked
by these people that they
consider they have fairly beaten." '
Declaring that Communist
China should be admitted to the
United Nations, Mr. Attlee said: |
"From the start there were
Communist countries in the United
Nations. It would be a perfectly
futile instrument if it
were to have only one lot of
people. It would cease to be an
instrument for peace. It would
be the instrument of one side of
a divided world.
"We think the present Chinese
Government should occupy the
seat assigned her in the United
Nations. There was a case for
postponement while the Korean
War was going on. Now is the
time to bring her in."
"You may say that the Communists
are out for world domi-
nation. That may be so-and so
much the worse. But it has got
to be tested," he said.
"From what I have seen, I do
not believe the Chinese Government
is a puppet in the hands of
Russia. The men who are running
China may realise the enormous
tasks they have on hand.
"'At least let us have the
chance of trying to get a more
peaceful situation." .
