THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7.
DINNER TO THR SEAMEN OF THE
GALATEA.
On Thursday the liberty-men of H.M.S. Galatea
were entertained at dinner in the supper-room at the
rear of the Town Hall About 200 sailors and
Marines were present. Most of the decorations of
the ball were left in the room which had a very
pretty appearance. H. E. H. the Dake of E Jin bargb
and suite, as well as tbe Chitf Secretary, several
members of the Miais'ry. His Worship the Mayor
of Adelaide, and several other HP.'* were also
present. An abundant spread was placed upon the
tables by Mr. Sines, to which ample justice was
done by the company, after which "The
Qneen" was proposed by tbe Chief Secretary, aud
drunk with enthusiasm. His Royal Highues
proposed "The Ladies" and "His Worship the
Mayor." which were also drunk with creat
cheering. In propnsiig "Tbe Health of the People
of South Australia." Hi« Royal Highness retained
thanks for the reception which bad been given to
him. and also to bis men. He spoke in very com
plimentary ani flittering terms of the manner in
which he had been received in South Australia, and
remarked that be had never met with a more h -arty
or a better reception anywhere than he hsd from
the people of this cilony. When Hia Royal Hi"h
ne*s was proposing the toasta jolly Jackcriedoutfor
time to fill their glasses, an exclamation wuic'i caused
considerable lauehter, in which His Roval Highness
joined. "The Health of tbe Cbief Sejetary" was
proposed by one of the sailors, alter which
-Our Noble Captain" was also proposed and duly
honored. The Band of the Galatea was present,
and enlivened tbe p'oceedin^s by some selections
of muaic. After the dinner was concluded and
the company had separated, same of the tars and
marines adjourned to the Urge h&l! upstairs, wli-re
they amused themselves by dancino-. to the
music of a portion of Chipman's Band' Jiek ap
peared in a jolly humor, ana seemed to enjoy hioistlf
amazingly. ,
About 6 o'clock in the evening" the Galatea Band
arrived from (he Exhibition Building, when they
also partook of dinner, in company with His Wor
ship the Mayor and two or three of the Councillors,
after which "The Queen" was proposed by Big
Worship the Mayor, and drunk with cheering.
The Biud-ma-ter afterwards rose, and expressed the
thanks of himself and tbe remainder ot the men
for the manner in which the biaejickets hid been
entertained. - The Health of H.a Worship the
Mayor' was then drunk with great cheering which
compliment His Worship briefly acknowledged,
and invited the lian i into his room to take a cfear
and a glass of wine with him, which invitation
was willingly accepted, an-1 the proceedings cloaed.
Tbe men of the Galatea are quite pleased with
the reception which they have met with, and have
been beard to express, themselves aston<sbed at
what they have eeeu here, not expecting to see
anything like it so Or away from their home
