SUSPECIED HOUSEBREAKER
SHOT IN HEAD
MELBOURNE, Thursday.— A sus
pected housebreaker was shot in
the head and critically injured by
police in a chase at East Brunswick
to-night. According to a police re
port, the man was attempting to
break into the rear of the house
of Mr. R. Power in St. Phillip
Street. East Brunswick, about 8.45
p.m. Mrs. Power disturbed the man
and shouted to a neighbour. Mr.
Alwyn Smith, a taxi-driver, for
help. Mr. Smith and a man who
was passing by at the time seized
the suspect as he was trying to
scale an 8 feet paling fence at the
rear of Mr. Power's house. Mr.
Smith struck the suspect a hard
blow on the jaw and felled bim.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Power tele
phoned the police. Just as the wire
less patrol arrived, the suspect
leapt to his feet and broke free.
He ignored the police command to
stop. A member of the wireless
patrol then fired three shots over
the fugitive's head. The cnan fell
to the ground, and it was found
that one shot had entered his head.
He was taken to hospital and ad
mitted in a critical condition.
