Notes and Comments.
Writs Against the Speaker.
Members generally presented a woe-begonc
appearance when the House met at the usual
time yesterday afternoon. There were few who
did not betray evidence that an adjournment
would be about the most acceptable thing on
earth. One thing was certain, there was very
little fight left in any of them. Proceedings
opened—after prayers of course!—with an
announcement by Mr. Speaker of the receipt of
writs issued by Messrs. Reid and M'Donald.
He experienced no difficulty in obtaining the
necessary authority to defend the actions.
Leave was also given to introduce a bill to
extend the operations of the Fire Brigades Acts,
and then the bill was read a first time. “To
facilitate the settlement of industrial peace,"
was the subject of a little bill which
Mr. Powers obtained leave to introduce. Some*
thing to facilitate legislative labours appeared
to be much more to the point at the moment.
The threatened encroachment on private
members’ day by the Government was again
introduced by the Premier, who desired to
annex Friday. Mr. Powers and other members
on his sido strougly protested, and eventually
a compromise was effected, the Premier agree*
ing to give the next day to private members, and
afterwards to permit the first half of both
Thursdays and Fridays to be devoted to the
same purpose.
