OAKEY
July 29.—' The annual meeting of
the Oakey and District Race Club
was held in the Oddfellows Hall.
Mr. A. G. Walker presided in the
absence ot Mr. B. McGovern. The
president's report was adopted, ine
secretary answered several ques
tions relative to wages, Improve
ments, and refreshment charges In
the balance sheet. The matter of
rails for course Improvements has
been deferred until a. later date.
Considerable discussion centred on
the possibility of racing on certain
Saturdays. The matter was dealt
with exhaustively, and resulted in
the motion "that Saturday racing
be tried prior to applying for fur
ther Saturday . dates on the basis
of one Saturday per auarter. This
was carried. The opinion of the
meeting was that the committee
should take certain dates well in
advance at regular intervals. At
the election of officers and com
mittee Mr. D. Wlnten was elected
patron, Mr. K. C. Hofmann audi
tor. and Messrs. J. Auger, R. Arml-

July 27.— A prize shoot over the
300 yards range was held by the
Clifton Rifle Club during the week
end. Nineteen members took part.
The winners were G. Lack, with
a score of 91 off the rifle, and a
total of 105, and K. J. Langsdorf
(93 off the rifle, a total of 105).

July 28.— The annual general
meeting of the Prattcn Rifle Club
was held on the range. There was
a good attendance of members and
others who- Intend becoming mem
bers of the club. The captain of
the club (Mr. James Payne) pre
sided. In pre-war years the club
functioned actively, and gained
some buccess in intor-club matches,
including several with New South
/Wales clubs. It was decided to ro-
sume the- activities of the club. In
his report the captain stated that
the year had commenced with a
membership of 30, and at the close
of the' year the number was 28.
The loss, he said, would be over
come by the admission of a num
ber of new members. The official
reopening of the range took placo
In May of the present year, it was
decided then that practice shoots
only would be hola until equip
ment helpful to good scoring was
available. Consequently, no prize
shoots .had been conducted. The
practice shoots Had been well at
tended. A pleasing fenturc of them,
Mr. Payne said, was .the marked
improvement shown by the, younger
members. The captain expressed
his thanks to all who had assisted
the club during Uie year. Several
members paid tributes to Mr
Payne and his wife for Uielr con
tinued Interest in the club. A. vote
of thanks to them was carried by

ing of the St. Thomas's Church of
England Women's Guild was held
recently. Those present were Mes-
dames A. E. Cameron (president),
W. Walsh. F. Barron, W. Batzloff
and T. Batzloff (secretary), and
Miss Betty Cameron (treasurer). A
garden party, to be held at the re
sidence of Mrs. A. E. Cnmerdn, was
arranged for August. An invita
tion to all to attend was extended
by the guild. It was agreed to ask
the Glennle girls to be present, and
to send an invitation to the Oakey
Church of England Women's Guild.
Mrs. R, Barron and family en
tertained a number of friends at
their home on Saturday night, In
honour of Mr. R. Barron's birth
day, Those present enjoyed games
and two novel competitions wero
also conducted. Considerable amuse
ment was caused by comic songs
contributed by Mr. B. Williams,

worked tor the branch during the
past year.
Tho annual statement of the
treasurer (Mr. W. J. T. Ncnle) re
vealed that the year started with
a credit balanco of £76/2/4, ond
finished with a credit ot £88/5/7.
In all £85/4/ was sent to head
quarters throughout the year. Con
gratulations were offered to the
members on the year's work by
Mr. A. Hamilton, Mr. C. C. Wynn
(branch auditor), Mrs. Mills and
Mrs. C. C. Wynn.
The resignation of tho treasurer
(Mr. W. J. T. Ncale) was received,
and was accepted with regret. Mr.
Wynn paid tribute to the work of
Mr. Neale throughout the years.
The president (Mrs. Sapsford) said
that It was with the deepest re
gret that she had received the
resignation of Mr. Neale, who had
been a tower of strength during
many of the war years. Miss
Peggy Mills, of Victoria Hill, and
Miss Deacon also paid tribute
to the help they had .received from
Mr. Neale during his term, of of
fice.

Miss Richardson addressed the
meeting on the general work of
the Red Cross, and said that she
had regretted not being able to
visit branches during war time,
but the huge administrative effort
necessary during the war years In
Queensland had prevented this.
She paid tribute to tho work of
the branches. The work in hospi
tals, with particular reference to
Greenslopes, was one of the sub
jects touched on by Miss Rich
ardson. She also made reference' to
the blood bank, the. scheme for as
sisting mothers now operating In
Brisbane, the rest room at the
General Hospital, hospital libraries,
handicrafts and the earing of men
from the 1914-18 War.
Miss Richardson's address was
complete, in that it covered all
branches of Red Cross work and
answered many questions for mem
bers. She was thanked for her able
address by Mrs. Sapstord. A vote
of thanks to the officers was moved
by Mrs. A. E. Marshal), and a
vote of thanks to the chairman

July 29.— The monthly meeting
of the Roma District Hospitals
Board was held on July 23. Thove

J. S. Nnson, Dr. W. Feather, end
the secretary (Mr. W. Lester). The
order of business was suspended
to permit discussion on the ap
pointment of a medical officer at
WaHumbllla. A letter from the
Wallumbilla Hospital Committee
was discussed ond it was decided
that Dr. G. H. Dodson (Roma) be
appointed visiting medical officer,
wallumbilla Hospital, to visit
cases weekly at the sr.me calory
and allowance as previously, but
that Dr. Dodson be advised that
patients in public wards or at-
! tending the public out-patients de
partment are entitled to free
; treatment unless they elect to
treated as private patients. It was
decided that the Wallumbilla Hos
pital committee be advised that Its
recommendation was fully con
sidered by the board and that the
board is unable to accede to the
rcqu'st to appoint Dr. Main as

On the motion of Messrs, Nason

the cost of the erection of a
morgue at Wallumbilla.
The report by the ehalrmon of
the Works and Establishment com
mittee stated, with regard to an
X-ray plant for the Roma Has
Sital, that the Radium Institute
ad requested that the State
I Stores Board place on official
1 order for a new X-ray plant. One
firm had submitted a new con
tract for the maintenance of the
old X-ray plant at an increased
charge. It was recommended that
the renewal of this contract should
not be effected, but should be de
ferred until the new X-ray plant
was installed.
Mr. F. L, Cullcn, architect, had
advised that tho completion of the
plans and specifications of tin
nurses' quarters at the Roma Hos
pital was expected shortly and thai
theso would be ready for submis
sion to the Department of HcalU

The finance committee recom
mended with regard to the Treas
ury loan of £3000 for the Mitchell
Hospital steam laundry that the
chairman be authorised to sign,
under seal, the -bond required by
the Treasury In connection with
this loan, vo that advances would
be available. Concerning debenture
loans, £1600 for the medical
superintendent's residence ot Surat,
£3000 for the Roma Hospital brick
laundry, and £1600 for the
Mitchell Hospital Isolation ward,
tho necessary orders In council
had been Issued In respect to these,
end it was reoammended that the
board take up these loans Immedi
ately. An advance in respect of the
£3000 loan for the Roma brick
lnundry was required Immediately
to meet the payment of the hydro
extractor, which hod been sup
plied.
On the motion of Messrs. Nnson
and Hcmbrow it was decided that
the application for the payment of
overtime by the secretary be re
commended to the Department for
approval. On the motion of Messrs.
Nason and Murphy it was decided
that the board place on record Its
appreciation of the services ren
dered by Mr. C. O'Rourke as act
ing-secretary. and. that the board
endeavour to find him a position
on the staff.
A special meeting of the board
was held subsequently tor the pur
pose of considering a resolution to
borrow £2000 by debenture loan
tor buildings at Surat., On the mo
tion of Messrs. Nason and Murphy
the following resolution was cor-
rled: "The board hereby resolves
to borrow the sum of £2000 by
way of debenture loan for the pur
pose of erecting the Medical
Superintendent's residence, the re
modelling of the hospital, and the
Installotlon of new equipment ot
1 the Surat Hospital : such loan to
be over the term of 10 years with i
1 interest at the rate of 3H per
' cent."
